CHALLENGING QUALIFYING FOR ÁLEX MÁRQUEZ AHEAD OF SAN MARINO GP18 September 2021 | San Marino GP Qualifying Álex Marquez endured a tough day of qualifying for the San Marino Grand Prix and will now depart from the seventh row at Misano. Although conditions remained fair at the Italian circuit on Saturday, things did not fall for the LCR Honda CASTROL rider and he eventually had to settle for 19th place on the grid for tomorrow’s MotoGP race.
As hoped, the Spaniard made a step forward in FP3 as he found around a second of improvement in dry conditions from Friday, but it was still not enough to secure a top-10 position (and progress to Q2) as he ended in 16th. After taking 15th in a very tight FP4, Álex was then unfortunate to see a flying lap chalked off at the end of Q1 due to a yellow flag, leaving him down in 19th overall.Álex Márquez – 19th (1’32.476)“Second day here and we made a big improvement from yesterday in the dry in the morning. I still made some adjustments in the afternoon and in FP4 we did a really good job and I made another step forward and felt good. In the qualy (Q1) we were quite unlucky, I did a good lap time, a 32.4, and then later on I was going much faster – maybe not enough to get through to Q2, but close – and unfortunately there was a crash at turn 10 and a yellow flag, so that lap was cancelled. That was very unlucky, but that’s how it is sometimes and you have to accept it. So tomorrow I’m motivated to make a good start and, in the morning, we’ll try to improve in the final sector and then we’ll be ready for the race.”
